We can do this for several reasons:
  • Our Press's mission (and the mission of the Academies) is more about dissemination of social value than cost recovery, though the Press is expected to be self-sustaining
  • We've developed efficient tools
  • Our kind of publication is its own best advertising
  • Currently, few people want to read long books online
  • We are beneficiaries of the standards battles of the last ten years.
