Bad habits:
  • to first try to find ways to sell the material at the highest possible price, because of absurdly thin margins (every penny counts).
  • To sell at a high price, you have to provide differential access between those who can pay and those who cannot.
Differential access antithetical to scholarly discourse, but there are lots of ways to lock or encumber information:
  • behind encryption envelopes,
  • via IP domain access shields,
  • password/cookie systems
  • printing can be restricted,
  • access can be timed,
  • ownership can be conditional.
